Tandra Chanda is a pioneering contemporary glass artist from Kolkata whose work blends European studio-glass mastery with the colours, textures, and storytelling traditions of India. Trained at Central Saint Martins, London, and further mentored in Germany and Scotland through prestigious scholarships such as the Charles Wallace India Trust Award and the Dali Fellowship, she brings deep technical expertise to every piece.
Her practice spans stained glass, fused and slumped glass, engraving, casting, and large-scale architectural installations—including works for Vidyasagar House and Tagore Hall. Her art is rooted in nature, childhood memories of Bengal, and the ever-changing poetry of light.
With exhibitions across India, the UK, Germany, and beyond, Tandra continues to shape the landscape of contemporary glass art while engaging in cross-cultural workshops and educational projects worldwide.
My work begins in the quiet intensity of the studio, where heat, colour, and light converge at the glass furnace. As I shape molten glass, the vivid impressions of my childhood in Bengal—alpana motifs, terracotta carvings, tapestries, and mythological imagery—return to guide my hand. The furnace becomes a space of transformation, where glass responds to every gesture and temperature shift, revealing the poetry of light. In this dance between control and surrender, the colours of my early memories reappear with new luminosity as they fuse, slump, and settle into form.
My practice spans traditional stained glass and contemporary techniques such as engraving, casting, fusing, slumping, and blowing. Each process offers a distinct way to interpret nature—not as a literal reflection, but as an emotional presence shaped by my experiences. In these moments beside the glowing furnace, I engage in an ongoing dialogue between material, memory, and imagination. Every piece becomes a search for meaning, a union of heat, colour, breath, and intuition, leading me again and again to the transformative beauty of glass and the light that moves through it.
